For The First Time, Non-FLDS Members Run For Office In Hildale, Utah

The election today in Hildale, Utah, will be one to watch because for the first time the town has candidates running for mayor and town council seats who are not associated with a now infamous polygamist church.

Hildale and neighboring Colorado City, Arizona is home to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the leader of which sits in a Texas prison.

Hildale’s population is just under 3,000 and only has 365 registered voters.

Up until now, the mayor, council and police force have all been chosen by church leaders.

If non-FLDS members are elected today, it will be the first time in the town’s history.
