UNR Student Involved In Controversial Traffic Stop Speaks Out

The University of Nevada Reno graduate student involved in a controversial traffic stop in Reno that was caught on tape is speaking out.

Kevin McReynolds was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by a University Police officer last month. During the traffic stop, the officer was caught on camera saying he would shoot McReynolds rather than fight him because of McReynold's size.

The university has launched an investigation into the incident and the officer is on leave.

In a statement released to the Reno Gazette-Journal, McReynolds said the "tepid response" from UNR and similar incidents that happened show that there is a “systemic racial inclusivity problem” on campus.

McReynolds said he was targeted during the traffic stop because he was “too big and too black.”

He also expressed doubt that campus officials would have done anything to help him if an officer hadn’t been caught on tape.
