Metro Asks Group To Change Venue For Dinner Honoring Controversial Former Sheriff

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have asked the group Citizen Outreach to change the venue for a dinner honoring former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The dinner is planned for Saturday at the Tropicana Hotel-Casino. Police are concerned about the possibility of violent protests.

Arpaio was convicted of contempt in July for defying a court order instructing his department to stop detaining suspected undocumented immigrants.

However, President Donald Trump pardoned Arpaio last month.

He was set to receive the Conservative Leadership Conference’s Courage Under Fire Award at the Citizen Outreach’s dinner.

Chuck Muth is the event’s host and president of Citizen Outreach.

In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Muth declined to say where the event would be held or whether the former sheriff will attend.

The director of the Nevada chapter of the immigrant advocacy group Mi Familia Vota, said the organization is not planning anything formal for Arpaio’s visit.
