LAS VEGAS (AP) — Employers who contest citations from the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration receive reduced fines about half the time.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Saturday that an analysis of state and federal OSHA fatality records shows that the state agency has reduced fines by an average of $11,420.
Nevada OSHA will fine employers up to $50,000 for a violation that caused the death of an employee. Subsequent offenses raise the fine up to $100,000.
At least 157 people have died while on the job in southern Nevada from 2010 to 2016, resulting in employers being fined 34 times.
Chief Administrative Officer Jess Lankford says Nevada OSHA will work with employers informally to reduce the fine in exchange for the employer to address safety issues.
