CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada pays more than $10 million each year for allowing people to use credit cards to pay state fees, prompting officials to question who should pick up the tab.
The Nevada Appeal reported on Monday that of the two dozen state agencies that accept credit card payments, the majority of the fees come from the Department of Motor Vehicles that is budgeted to pay more than $7.2 million.
Senior Deputy State Treasurer Buddy Milazzo says credit card companies won't negotiate the interchange fee the state pays, which can cost up to 2 percent of each transaction.
Should the state consider passing the tab to the individual, it would require adding a surcharge the cardholder would pay for each transaction.
