Firefighters were battling a large brush fire that ignited from lightning east of Sparks near the Northern Nevada Medical Center this weekend.
The Prater Fire was reported Sunday afternoon, and initially threatened about 20 homes in the area. The fire quickly grew to more than 100 acres as it consumed cheat grass and sage brush.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports it isn’t known how much of the fire has been contained at this point, because the fire was quickly moving due to high winds from thunderstorms in the area. Fire officials said they had to respond to several reports of lightning-caused fires throughout yesterday in the Reno-Sparks area.
