North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee has called for a study on how nuclear waste might travel through Southern Nevada, amid concerns that a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain could become a reality.
During a board meeting of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, Lee said the state should fight President Donald Trump’s effort to restart licensing activity at Yucca Mountain while helping other states who want to store the nuclear waste.
The president requested $120 million in his federal budget for the fiscal year 2018 to restart the license application to permanently store nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain. The RTC’s board could receive a report as soon as next month.
