Major changes to Reno city politics could be on the horizon if a bill that passed in the State Senate makes it through the Assembly and the governor’s desk.
The Reno Gazette-Journalreports that Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve lobbied Las Vegas State Senator Tick Segerblom to push through an amendment to distinguish the office of mayor from the rest of the Reno City Council.
The move would give her veto power over council votes, and allow term-limited council members to run for the office. Under the amendment, Schieve would no longer be able to vote on items before the Reno City Council but could veto a council vote. The veto could then be overridden by a five-sixths vote of the council. The Reno Mayor would still preside over council meetings.
