The Government Accountability Office released a report this week that estimates the cost and the process to resume licensing for the nuclear storage facility at Yucca Mountain.
According to the report, it would take five years and cost an excess of $330 million. The GAO is a nonpartisan investigative arm of Congress. It created the report but issued no recommendation of the viability of storing nuclear waste at the site or restarting the licensing process.
Opponents of the project include many Nevada legislative officials and most of the state’s congressional delegation. They have all argued that restarting the licensing would be throwing more money into an unworkable project.
President Donald Trump has proposed in his budget about $120 million for the DOE to resume the licensing process at Yucca Mountain.
