Reno City Council Approves New Budget

The Reno City Council approved a new budget Wednesday, which will add six new police officers.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the council was dealing with almost no revenue growth headed into the next year, and the additions will reduce the city’s savings account.

The council ended up voting 6-1 to approve the $196 million general fund spending plan for the new fiscal year that begins July 1. Councilman Paul McKenzie was the only dissenting vote. Councilmembers cited sluggish growth from property and sales taxes charged by the city, which led to about $1 million less to spend. The city prioritized new police officers, downtown revitalization, and motel inspections.
