Nearly $4,000 In Donations Cut Washoe School Lunch Deficit

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Washoe County's school superintendent is praising local families who've come forward with contributions to help cut into a deficit in the district's school lunch program.

District officials say the unpaid balance in students' lunch accounts totals more than $66,000 this year — more than double last year's deficit.

The school board considered but rejected a proposal last week to begin serving only cheese sandwiches as the entree for children whose accounts were more than $13.50 in arrears.

Superintendent Traci Davis announced Tuesday that about $2,900 in private donations have been collected to help cover the costs. That amount had grown to more than $3,800 by noon Wednesday. She says she's extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.
