The Washoe County Public Defender’s Office is among a variety of supporters for a measure to return some ex-convicts’ voting rights in Nevada, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
Senate Bill 125 had a second committee hearing Thursday where no one spoke against the bill.
Under the proposal, ex-felons would have their voting rights and the right to serve on a jury automatically restored after one year of being on parole or probation. Currently, former convicts must go through a series of legal hoops to get back many of their civil rights.
The Senate passed the bill along party lines. The Assembly Corrections, Parole, and Probation Committee will now decide whether to pass SB125 to a floor vote. It has until May 19 to make that decision.
