Tribal Leaders To Feds: Listen To Us On Bears Ears

Tribal leaders in Utah have said they plan to take the Trump administration to court if they rescind the Bears Ears National Monument designation.

As Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke begins his 45-day review of the monument’s designation, Native American leaders toldthe Salt Lake Tribune they have yet to hear back on their requests to meet about the Bears Ears Region and are concerned that the federal government will once again go back on its promise to the country’s native peoples.

The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition represents the Hopi, Navajo, Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute and Zuni tribes. Zinke will visit Utah and the Bears Ears area early next week, and said in an interview last week he would sit down with tribal leaders as part of the review.
