BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada wildlife officials have found what appears to be a piranha carcass on the shore of a pond.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reportedMonday that the carcass had been found at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
A witness also says they saw a piranha swimming in the pond.
Officials say piranhas are not native to Nevada, which means somebody illegally possessed and released the fish into the pond. The species is found in South America.
Authorities say they won't be able to confirm the species of the fish until a flesh test is completed, but a department of wildlife spokesman says the carcass will be investigated as a wildlife crime.
The spokesman says this could be the latest incident of a reproducing, invasive species barging into southern Nevada.
