RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada state and local officials say 5 miles of temporary barriers will be built to contain flooding in a Reno-area neighborhood beset by high water following caused by storms and rapid snowmelt in recent weeks.
Washoe County announced Tuesday that work would begin Wednesday to install a 4-foot wall filled with sand in Lemmon Valley.
Work is expected to take about a week. Crews then plan to pump water from the neighborhood over the wall and into Swan Lake
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Sam Hicks is the incident commander.
He said it took about two weeks to get data needed to move forward with the barrier.
He says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agrees it's the best short-term solution to the flooding.
