LAS VEGAS (AP) — An awkward breakup of the nation's fifth-largest school district is continuing a messy slog toward an August deadline, with obstacles including a lawsuit that state education officials believe is an effort to stop it.
The Clark County School District sued the state in December, asking a judge in Carson City to block parts of a reorganization law passed by the state Legislature in 2015.
State Education Department spokesman Greg Bortolin told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the lawsuit is clearly aimed at stopping the reorganization.
The Las Vegas-area district has more than 320,000 students at 357 campuses.
The Legislature approved shifting power from a central office toward individual schools.
Meanwhile, a panel overseeing the rollout continues to work with consultants to get to what the panel chairman calls the finish line.
