Utah Rep. Calls For Constitutional Convention

A Utah state representative is calling for a constitutional convention.

The St. George Spectrum reports Republican Utah Rep. Merrill Nelson wants to use Article V of the Constitution to impose term limits on legislators and to cut federal spending, among other goals.

A constitutional convention as outlined in Article V of the Constitution has never happened before.

It requires 34 different state legislatures to call for the convention to meet, and then any proposed amendments would require 38 states' approval to take effect.

If Nelson's proposal before the Utah Legislature occurs, it will be the third straight year the body has taken up the possibility of requesting to convene a constitutional convention, but last session it did not get through the Utah Senate.
