An expansion and upgrade to the Las Vegas Convention Center is poised to enter its second phase.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors on Tuesday unanimously authorized an eight-month, $1.28 million contract extension. The approval will allow Cordell Corp. to begin designing a 600,000-square-foot exhibit hall.
The project's first phase involved the demolition of the Riviera.
A seven-member oversight panel appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval will review construction and design ideas generated by Cordell officials, convention authority staff, customers and other stakeholders in the convention center.
Cordell principal Terry Miller says he hopes to bid the design and engineering of the project by August and break ground on the new hall by early 2018.
