CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's Capitol building will receive some long-awaited updates to make it more accessible to disabled people.
The Nevada Appeal reportsthat workmen began replacing the access ramp behind the state Capitol last week. The ramp had cracked concrete and rusty hand railings. Public Works Manager Gus Nunez says it also needs modifications to make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Nunez says the existing ramp was built in the early 1970s and has been deteriorating rapidly recently because moisture has been getting into the structure.
The new ramp will be wider, longer and less steep. Nunez says it will also include an electric defrosting grid.
Nunez says the $86,000 project should be completed by mid-December.
