Name: Scott T. Hammond
Office: State Senate, District 18
On-Air Interview Summary:
Scott Hammond is the incumbent for State Senate District 18 and he is running to retain his seat.
The former teacher and current executive director for Somerset Academy Foundation sponsored the bill that created the Education Savings Accounts program. The Nevada State Supreme Court recently ruled the program was unconstitutional.
Hammond told KNPR’s State of Nevada that he supported the ESA’s because he feels that many schools have become complacent and competition can help. He said that public education is not for everyone and individualized education can be the solution.
Hammond strongly supports the plan to reorganize the Clark County School District and create empowerment schools. He feels the plan will allow for more ownership of schools and allow parents to working a ‘branded entity’ instead of a nameless bureaucracy.
He said one of the biggest issues his constituents have is still uncertainty of the economy. He said people he has talked to want to feel more secure in their jobs and in their future.
