State Assembly District 21 - Derek Armstrong - Republican

Name: Derek Armstrong

Office: State Assembly, District 21

On-Air Interview Summary:

Local attorney Derek Armstrong is running to retain his seat in the Assembly for District 21. He told KNPR’s State of Nevada that he takes the values he learned in the Marine Corps to Carson City.

Armstrong was chair of the taxation committee. He voted for the commerce tax to fund education improvements around the state. Armstrong said he voted for it because the tax base in the state had dwindled but the population had grown. He said improving education was the reason he ran for the Legislature to begin with.

Armstrong felt like the expanded taxes was a way to have companies that were based in Nevada but had most of their employees out of state pay their fair share.

He believes the state has made tremendous strides in improving education not just by putting more money into education, but also by attaching accountability measures to that funding. Armstrong is excited about the new empowerment school modeling that is moving forward in the Clark County School District.
