LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada will get $690,000 in federal funds to fight the spread of the Zika virus and manage local cases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that the state will receive its share of the $60 million total dollars designated to the effort.
The money will be spent investigating and keeping surveillance on local outbreaks, increasing lab capacity for testing and mosquito control and monitoring.
A pregnancy registry will also help women and babies born with the virus.
The virus can spread through mosquito bites, sex and from a mother to her baby during her pregnancy.
Zika causes only a mild illness in most people, but infection during pregnancy can lead to severe brain-related birth defects.
Zika cases have been reported in both Clark and Washoe counties.
