Nevada is going to pay $120,000 to settle a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency complaint about stormwater runoff pollution from state Transportation Department facilities.
A court consent decree approved Tuesday by Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Board of Examiners acknowledges state responsibility for stormwater management violations and formalizes plans to prevent them in the future.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that half the fine will go toward the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.
The governor says Nevada faced paying millions of dollars for violations at transportation department facilities in Reno that drain into the Truckee River, and at Spooner Summit near Lake Tahoe.
State transportation chief Rudy Malfabon says the 2015 Legislature approved spending $13 million and adding 42 new positions to address stormwater runoff at facilities and roads statewide.
