Lodging Tax Increase For Convention Center Expansion Floated

A committee is moving forward with a proposal to raise hotel taxes to expand the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee voted Monday to support raising a lodging tax by half a percentage point in Clark County. The money would be earmarked for renovating and expanding the center by at least 600,000 square feet.

The conference center now encompasses 3.2 million square feet, but officials say it needs an upgrade to stay competitive in the lucrative convention market.

The recommendation will head to the governor and could take effect if it gets approval from the Legislature.

Hotel rooms in and around Las Vegas are already subject to a 12 percent tax that supports tourism, education and other services.
