Utah Lawmaker Plans Right-To-Die Bill

A Utah lawmaker is gearing up for her third attempt at passing a bill that would allow terminally-ill adults who are expected to live six months or less to choose to end their life.

Democratic Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck says it will likely be similar to the one she introduced during the 2016 session and include such safeguards as requiring that the patient is mentally competent and that two physicians sign off on the prognosis. She is open to making some tweaks based on her colleague's feedback.

The governor's office said in a statement that Gov. Gary Herbert is concerned that a right-to-die bill could be "a right to suicide."

Salt Lake City resident Carrie Snyder has an incurable form of cancer and is pushing for the bill, saying she would like the option to end her life on her own terms.
