Utah Investigating BYU Police Department

Brigham Young University's police department is under investigation from the Utah Department of Public Safety over how the department pulls police records from other agencies.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports BYU has pulled police records from Utah County in response to investigations regarding alleged violations of the school's strict honor code, including those pertaining to sexual assault.

In one case, the BYU honor code office pulled a police report regarding a reported rape before the report was given to the school's police department for investigation.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said the investigation is being conducted at BYU's request.

Previously, the school has said police investigations concerning sexual assaults and honor code investigations take place separately, and that students bringing such reports forward to police would not be referred to the school's honor code office.
