CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Indian Commission is seeking to preserve the campus of a historic boarding school once used to assimilate Native American children.
KOLO-TV in Reno reports about 150 people toured Stewart Indian School on Saturday as part of a fundraiser for preservation efforts.
The federal government opened the off-reservation school in 1890 and closed it in 1980.

Commission officials say more than 33,000 students came through the school in that 90-year span.
Commission executive director Sherry Rupert says students were forced to speak only English and forbidden from practicing any tribal traditions or ceremonies.
