Secy. Of Education To Visit Las Vegas

The federal government's top education official is due to visit a magnet school in Las Vegas this week as part of a three-state trip promoting the Obama administration's new Every Student Succeeds Act.

U.S. Education Secretary John B. King Jr. is also scheduled to talk about the importance of a well-rounded education during a Thursday appearance at the downtown Las Vegas Academy of the Arts.

King was confirmed last month as education secretary. He's promoting the rewrite of the federal No Child Left Behind Act that Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed in December.

Backers say it gives states greater control over public schools, while keeping annual testing to gauge student progress.

King is due to also hold events Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Springdale, Arkansas.
