UT To Explore Electronic Drivers' Licenses

A Utah lawmaker wants the state to study the feasibility of creating electronic drivers' licenses and come up with recommendations on how to move forward.

Rep. Craig Hall, a West Valley City Republican, is sponsoring a bill that would require the Utah Driver License Division to study the possibility of putting licenses on smartphones. Hall says several states are exploring the electronic option instead of or in addition to the plastic cards.

During an interim legislative session, Hall said he was considering a bill ordering their creation. He says he now realizes that the technology isn't all there yet, so he's calling for the study instead.

The study would have to address potential privacy issues, whether other jurisdictions will recognize the licenses and smartphone problems like dead batteries.
