Elko County Closer To Implementing Sales Tax Increase

Elko County is one step closer to implementing a sales tax increase.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the county commission approved the first reading of an ordinance that would increase sales taxes there from 6.85 percent to 7.1 percent no sooner than March 1.

Under the ordinance, the Elko County Fire Protection District would get 43 percent of the increased revenue and 43 percent would go to the Elko County Highway Board.

The remaining 14 percent would go to cities in the county for road improvement.

Council gave itself a deadline of June 2031 to determine whether or not the tax would still be necessary.
