Michael Schroeder, the man who became manager of the Las Vegas Review-Journal after its purchase late last year, has left that role.
The newspaper reports Schroeder no longer works for the R-J or for News + Media Capital Group LLC, the company that purchased the newspaper.
Schroeder attracted controversy by first not disclosing who bankrolled News + Media's purchase of the R-J, and then by scrubbing quotes from the R-J's coverage of the sale.
Then, Schroeder had a newspaper he managed in Connecticut publish stories criticizing a judge presiding over a Las Vegas trial involving Sheldon Adelson – whose family was revealed to have been behind the purchase.
Those stories were written under a pseudonym, Edward Clarkin, even though nobody by that name existed in Connecticut.
In the New Britain (Conn.) Herald, a newspaper where he is editor and publisher, Schroeder published an open letter today apologizing for his actions in sanctioning its coverage of the Adelson trial, and the use of the Clarkin figure to write such pieces.
