Winter Storm Hits Northern Nevada

Lake Tahoe is under a winter storm warning and thousands of customers in northern Nevada are without power as a cold front packing winds gusting up to 60 mph makes its way into the Sierra.

NV Energy reported about 3,000 outages around Reno and Carson City before noon Tuesday. More than 2,000 of those were in Douglas County south of Gardnerville.

The storm warning runs through 4 a.m. Wednesday at Tahoe, where up to 8 inches of snow is forecast at lake level. More than a foot is possible at the upper elevations with winds gusting up to 100 mph over ridge tops.

A winter storm advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday around Reno, where an inch or two of snow is expected in the valleys Tuesday afternoon, and another 4 to 10 inches overnight.
