Reno Officials Deny Supporting Refugee City Application

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Officials with the city say they did not support an application to make Reno a refugee city to take Syrian, Iraqi, Cuban and other refugees.

The University of Nevada, Reno's Northern Nevada International Center submitted an application to the U.S. State Department for Reno to become a refugee city, with support from city officials.

Mayor Hillary Schieve said Monday that she never lent her formal support for the application, which coincidentally was sent on Friday just hours before news of the terrorist attacks in Paris reached the United States. In the aftermath of the Paris attacks many American politicians have been discussing refugee resettlement.

Schieve says she had not asked the Reno City Council to approve a resolution of support at the time the application was submitted.
