UNLV Alumni Launch Campaign To Save Hey Reb Mascot

As some students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas call for the school's Confederate-themed mascot to change, two graduates are showing their support.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that James Kaikis and David Rapoport, who graduated in 2010 and 2011, respectively, launched the website keepheyreb.com on Wednesday. The website calls for alumni to stop donating if the mascot is changed.

Sen. Harry Reid in June suggested the university change their mascot and sports team name from the so-called "Running Rebels."

The university has used the "rebel" mascot since 1969, which was originally a wolf wearing a Confederate Army cap and uniform as the school mascot. Designed partially as a jab at the northern University of Nevada, Reno, it changed over to the current human mascot in 1983.
