SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Sparks Mayor Geno Martini says he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease but intends to serve through the end of his term in November 2018.
Martini announced Friday that he's been living with Parkinson's since 2012 but doesn't yet have any of the symptoms, such as shaking hands.
He said he's been working with a doctor to treat the illness with medication. He says he's feeling strong, adding that his back problems have caused him more pain.
Martini says his father died of Parkinson's so it was difficult to tell his mother of the diagnosis.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve says she was saddened to hear the news but knows Martini will continue his long relationship as a committed partner to improving the greater Reno-Sparks area. The Washoe County Commission also expressed its support.
