CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Democratic state Sen. Joyce Woodhouse is calling on lawmakers to start revising Nevada's teacher licensing process to ease a severe worker shortage in Clark County.
Woodhouse proposed the action on Wednesday, saying a more modern approach to licensing could help put more teachers in the classroom. Ideas developed over the next year could become bills introduced when the Legislature reconvenes in early 2017,
Woodhouse suggested lawmakers on the interim education committee start reviewing reciprocity options so teachers licensed in other states could more easily move to Nevada.
She also suggested expediting the license application process.
Woodhouse worked at the Clark County School District for 40 years and has served on legislative education committees for four sessions. She's in a competitive race for re-election against Republican charter school principal Carrie Buck.
