The Sparks City Council voted yesterday to approve insurance coverage for gender reassignment surgeries for transgender city employees.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the issue was combined with an agenda item that detailed changes and savings under the city’s new insurance plan.
Sparks City Council members were concerned with long-term savings for the city, especially when it comes to health care for retirees.
The city staff who presented the agenda item referred to the coverage changes as “legally requested” and “fiscally responsible” as well as important for following the terms of the Affordable Care Act.
