CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are poised to approve money for a new 24-hour anti-bullying hotline.
The legislative Interim Finance Committee was expected to vote Wednesday on a $114,000 contract that would create the line and keep it running through next June.
Legislators approved a broad anti-bullying bill this spring that called for the hotline as a way to reduce bullying-related suicides.
The state plans to work with the Crisis Call Center, which runs a suicide prevention hotline. One line at the center would be dedicated to bullying reports, and staff would be trained on how to best resolve the cases.
The center is also supposed to be able to accept text message reports no later than July 31. State officials say texting better suits the younger audience the hotline aims to help.
