Nevada State Prison Named To National Historic Register

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Carson City prison that predates Nevada's statehood has landed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Park Service added Nevada State Prison last week to its official list, which already includes 373 entries from Nevada.

The prison was established in 1862 and has been rebuilt several times.

The State Historic Preservation Office said the prison's nomination to the register focused on the period between 1862 and 1967, when prisoners were treated as patients who could be healed through work. Many prisoners worked on the prison farm or in a sandstone quarry.

Nevada State Prison was closed in 2012. State lawmakers passed a bill this spring that lays the groundwork for the prison to reopen in the future, potentially as a tourist attraction.
