School trustees in Las Vegas are considering the first six building projects in a 14-school construction spurt aimed at relieving overcrowding in the nation's fifth-largest school district.
Clark County School District officials say the first four new and two renovated schools are scheduled to open in August 2017. Eight new schools are slated to open in August 2018.
That'll bring to 369 the number of campuses in the district serving more than 320,000 students.
Construction will be paid for with $4.1 million derived from property taxes over the next 10 years.
District Chief Financing Officer Jim McIntosh tells KSNV-TV that's about half the $8.3 billion in construction needs over the next decade.
McIntosh says many elementary schools are using portable classrooms and year-round schedules to compensate for overcrowding.
