Fire Threatens Sage Grouse Habitat

Federal fire officials say lightning sparked a blaze that has burned more than 8 square miles of small pines and sage brush in a remote part of the high desert in central Nevada.

The Bureau of Land Management said Tuesday there's no immediate threat to any homes or private property. But he says the fire reported about 1 p.m. Monday is burning in some sage grouse habitat 15 miles northeast of Eureka.

The flames died down overnight due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity. But the BLM said fire activity was expected to pick up again Tuesday afternoon in winds gusting up to 25 mph.
