LAS VEGAS (AP) — Clark County residents could see a bump in their sales taxes next year if officials approve a proposal aimed at expanding the police force.
Clark County commissioners are expected to vote Tuesday on the so-called More Cops proposal, which would raise the county's sales tax rate from 8.1 percent to 8.15 percent. The Las Vegas Sun reports that there appears to be enough support on the panel for the measure to pass.
Law enforcement officials have tried unsuccessfully for a decade to get such a tax approved.
The latest version is a smaller increase than previous proposals. It would allow Las Vegas police to hire another 133 officers, and would provide money for dozens more officers in Henderson, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and Boulder City.
