LV Man Sentenced For Claiming Too Many Students At Charter School

RENO (AP) — A Las Vegas man has been ordered to repay more than $300,000 to the state after he misreported the number of students attending his online school.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that 30-year-old Roy Harden was sentenced this week for theft and filing false documentation in a public office.

He was sentenced to suspended sentences of 24-60 months for theft and 12-32 months in prison on the charge of filing a false report. Harden is on probation to repay the state and was ordered to serve six months in the Clark County Detention Center.

Prosecutors say Harden created an online charter school and reported 481 students when only 121 students were enrolled. Based on these additional 360 students, the Department of Education overpaid Renaissance Academy by more than $300,000.
