Nevada Firefighters Concerned about Extra Cheatgrass Growth

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Late rains in Nevada have firefighters worried about the coming dry season, especially as new cheatgrass crops keep growing.

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Tim Leighton tells KTNV-TV that late rain brought in extra generations of cheatgrass, an invasive species that increases risks for fires.

He says typically there is only one crop of grass that grows, but this year there are multiple crops. He says the new crops are going to dry out and become a serious problem as soon as fire season hits.
