CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have approved a hard-fought bill to regulate companies such as Uber that allow people to hail a ride through a smartphone app.
The Assembly approved AB175 early Saturday morning after a marathon workday. The bill creates regulations for "transportation network companies" and imposes a 3 percent tax on taxi and ride-hailing company rides.
The measure goes to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who's expected to sign it.
The proposal was dubbed the most-lobbied issue of the legislative session and faced stiff opposition from the taxi industry and Democrats concerned with safety regulations. It failed the Senate twice before taxes expected to yield $70 million were added.
Uber briefly operated in Nevada last fall before a judge issued a restraining order against the company, saying it wasn't following rules for taxicabs.
