Scholarships For Low Income Students Discussed In NV Senate

CARSON CITY (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a measure that would extend need-based scholarships to low income college students.

Lawmakers reviewed SB 227 in the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday.

The measure allocates $10 million over the next two years to be used for need-based scholarships targeting students with low incomes at Nevada's community and state colleges.

Students would need to take a full course load and be Nevada residents to qualify for the grants.

Presidents of several Nevada community colleges supported the measure and said that a minuscule number of low income students in the state attend two-year colleges.

The committee took no action on the bill.
