Historic northern Nevada Indian school gets $20,000 donation

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The organization that supported events celebrating Nevada's 150th birthday has donated $20,000 toward an oral history program at a historic northern Nevada Indian school.

The Nevada 150 Foundation announced a grant this week that will help continue the program at the Stewart Indian School outside of Carson City.

The grant will be used to hire an oral historian to interview and record former students from the school, which operated between 1890 and 1980. Interviews with former students will be digitally catalogued and available at the University of Nevada, Reno and the state library.

Assembly members are also expected to vote on SB63 on Thursday, which places the state Indian Commission in charge of managing the school and creates a special commission budget fund specifically for gifts to the commission.
