CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A preliminary count shows an effort to recall Republican Nevada Assembly Speaker John Hambrick has fallen far short of the number of signatures needed to trigger a special election.
Documents submitted to the Secretary of State from the Clark County Registrar indicate 270 people signed a petition seeking a recall election. The petition needed more than 4,100 signatures, which would represent 25 percent of the voters who cast a ballot in Hambrick's district this past election.
The Secretary of State's office still needs to issue a formal decision on whether the petition was sufficient.
Recall director A.J. Maimbourg said Thursday that she launched the effort because Hambrick didn't take a strong enough position against taxes. She blamed a company contracted to help gather signatures for the shortfall.
