CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing bills that would allocate nearly $10 million toward high-tech workforce development at state community colleges.
Democratic Sen. Joyce Woodhouse presented three bills that would fund science, technology, engineering and math programs on Tuesday to the Senate Finance Committee.
Woodhouse and a bevy of community college representatives said the funding was necessary to help Nevada's workforce prepare for the impending arrival of large technology companies like Tesla and Switch.
SB496 would allow Nevada community colleges to apply for up to $6 million in grants to help fund changes in curriculum and degree programs that correspond to emerging industries.
SB493 would allocate $3.5 million to a matching grant program for colleges, nonprofit groups and private businesses to support STEM industry programs.
