CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Lawmakers are reviewing bills that could lead to a new regulatory framework for ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft.
The Senate Commerce and Labor Committee held a hearing Monday for SB439 and SB440. One bill would create regulations for so-called "transportation network companies," which allow people to hail a ride using a smartphone.
The second provides a special class of insurance for those companies.
Uber briefly operated in Nevada this fall before a state judge issued a restraining order, saying the company refused to follow regulations governing taxicab companies.
Republican Sen. James Settelmeyer said he thought it was improper for Uber to enter Nevada without regulations, and said lawmakers will consider whether such companies should operate in Nevada at all.
Cab companies say Uber is wrongly seeking "special treatment."
